The Kai Hub offers a variety of services for the community, including a free food store with no requirements, a cozy social space for gatherings over tea/coffee and biscuits, a local art gallery, and a special-priced boutique op shop where you can get clothes or shoes for spare change. Additionally, the Helping Hands Community Network office provides essential household items, gardening resources, seeds, as well as advice, advocacy, and support. Originally established during the Covid pandemic, Pataka Kai aims to enhance food resilience in Shannon and nearby rural areas by distributing rescued food to combat food insecurity and reduce waste. Plans are also in progress for a community garden and laundromat. This service is available to Shannon residents up to Tokomaru on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm.
